The mission of the ACES Archive Committee is to collect, organize, document and store historical and ongoing significant information. Annually, the Board and Archive Committee will determine if any significant new information needs to be archived. In February 2011, the late Dr. Malinda L. Hayes envisioned African American history and culture to be represented in Sun City Peachtree (SCP) events. Dr. Hayes discussed her idea with several friends at a gathering in the home of late Pat Bynum. Joining Dr. Hayes and Pat were Mary Flowers, Deborah Land and the late Joy Terrell. Subsequently, an e-blast and phone calls were made inviting SCP African American residents to attend a meeting at Club Peachtree. The meeting was held by the Lifestyle Committee and led by SCP resident, Diana Berg and Lifestyle Director Stacy Gooding. Its purpose was to plan activities to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday. Sun City Peachtree African American residents who participated in the planning committee were Vera McIntosh, Mildred Slayton, Deborah Land, Dr. Melinda Hayes, Sojona Warren, Lillian Ayers, Mary Flowers, Gail Edwards, Pat Bynum and Bernadette Murphy. The Black History Planning Committee was then formed and continued to meet. The committee grew and continued monthly planning and organizing activities for Black History Month. The Black History Planning Committee hosted such successful events as: “A Soulful Taste of History” – The committee partnered with community restaurants and local chefs to plan a successful fund raiser. The meals were served in six of the model homes and represented foods from Africa, African American, Caribbean, Creole and southern heritages. History of the Black Press – A case study by member, Daniel Murphy, the great-grandson of John H. Murphy who published the first edition of the Afro-American Newspaper in 1892. “A Lecture, Performance: Sojourner Truth—Her Wit, Her Wisdom, Her Story” – Created and performed by Celena Bostic Perry. In September 2012, the Black History Planning Committee’s purpose expanded to include: celebrating significant events in Black History, educating the Sun City Peachtree community and providing service and charitable donations to the Griffin Community. June 2014, the African American Cultural and Educational Society (ACES) Interest Group was formed. Bernadette Murphy was the chairperson. The interest group was open to all SCP residents. Its mission statement was: Celebrate, Educate and Give Back. A few of the goals accomplished included: Forums on Historical Events; Drama; Music; Displays; giving back and supporting schools and connecting with the community. May 2016, ACES became a charter club under the leadership of Gail Kelly. In 2025, ACES continues to grow and reach out to both its SCP community and surrounding communities. Its mission statement is: To recognize and celebrate African American cultural, educational and social events. |
